Add Brea Olinda Unified to the list of Orange County school districts that have suspended physical conditioning workouts for athletics amid the spike in coronavirus cases.
The district, which features one CIF-member high school in Brea Olinda, has called off modified conditioning and skill training sessions for the rest of December, Wildcats girls athletic director Jill Matyuch said.
“We are committed to resuming athletics as soon as possible and the district will revisit that on January 4,” Matyuch said in an email on Tuesday, Dec. 8.
The pause of workouts arrives as Brea Olinda Unified has shifted to distance learning from its hybrid plan for the rest of this month and January.
“This is due to the spread (of COVID-19) in local communities,” Matyuch said.
Two other large districts — Anaheim Union and Santa Ana Unified — have also suspended modified workouts. The sessions remain legal under the Aug. 3 guidelines from the California Department of Public Health for high school and youth sports.
The new, regional stay-at-home orders for Southern California don’t apply to schools that have already reopened, the Orange County Department of Education confirmed.
